OVERVIEW

WiseTabs ("we", "our", or "us") provides a Chrome extension that groups your open tabs. This Privacy Policy explains what data we access, how we use it, where it is processed, and how it is stored and shared.

The short version: WiseTabs processes tab data locally and, when you use the organize feature, sends tab titles and URLs to our backend to generate grouping suggestions. We do not sell your data. The extension does not use cookies for analytics or advertising.

DATA WE ACCESS AND PROCESS

WiseTabs may access and process the following data:

  • Tab data: tab titles, tab URLs, tab IDs, and existing group names/colors to generate group suggestions
  • Identity data: Chrome Identity ID and email (if available from Chrome) for usage limits and licensing
  • Preferences: settings such as theme and auto-sort
  • License and usage data: plan, activation status, expiration, and usage counts

The extension does not use third-party advertising trackers and does not use cookies for analytics or advertising.

LEGAL BASIS FOR PROCESSING (EEA/UK USERS)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or United Kingdom, we process your personal data based on the following legal grounds:

  • Contract performance: Processing tab data and identity information is necessary to provide the WiseTabs service you have requested.
  • Legitimate interests: We process usage data to enforce free-tier limits, prevent abuse, and improve our service. We have balanced these interests against your rights and determined they do not override your fundamental rights and freedoms.

HOW WE USE YOUR DATA

We use the data described above to:

  • Organize your tabs into groups and apply those groups in your browser
  • Check usage limits and license status
  • Enable subscription and billing features
  • Provide basic operational security and troubleshooting

WHERE DATA IS PROCESSED

On your device: The extension reads your open tabs and applies grouping changes in your browser.

On our servers: When you use the organize feature, we send tab titles and URLs (plus existing group info and your identity ID) to the WiseTabs backend to generate grouping suggestions.

INTERNATIONAL DATA TRANSFERS

WiseTabs uses service providers that may process data in the United States and other countries where they operate. When we transfer data outside the EEA/UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission.

DATA STORAGE

Local storage (on your device): settings, cached group summaries, device usage stats, and an anonymous ID if needed.

Sync storage (via Chrome): license activation status and user preferences that can sync across devices.

Server-side (WiseTabs backend): usage counters and entitlement records tied to your Chrome Identity ID or email. We use this to enforce free-tier limits and manage subscriptions.

DATA RETENTION

Server-side usage and entitlement data are retained as long as needed to provide the service and comply with legal obligations. We delete data upon request unless retention is required by law.

Local data remains on your device until you clear it or uninstall the extension.

DATA SHARING

We do not sell your data. We only share data with service providers needed to deliver WiseTabs:

  • AI processing (OpenAI): receives tab titles, URLs, and existing group info to generate grouping suggestions. OpenAI processes this data according to their API data usage policy.
  • Cloud infrastructure (Cloudflare Workers/KV): hosts the WiseTabs API and stores usage and entitlement data.
  • Payments (Lemon Squeezy): if you purchase a subscription, we pass your Chrome ID and optional email to link your subscription; payment details are handled by Lemon Squeezy.

PERMISSIONS

WiseTabs requests only the minimum permissions necessary to function:

  • tabs: read tab information and organize them into groups
  • tabGroups: create and manage tab groups
  • storage: save preferences and license status
  • identity / identity.email: access Chrome Identity ID and email (if available) for usage limits and licensing

SECURITY

We use HTTPS for all network requests and minimize the data sent to what is necessary to provide the service. We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data against unauthorized access, alteration, or destruction.

YOUR RIGHTS

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Erasure: Request deletion of your personal data (subject to legal retention requirements).
  • Restriction: Request that we limit how we use your data.
  • Portability: Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests.

If you are in the EEA/UK and believe we have not adequately addressed your concerns, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

YOUR CHOICES AND CONTROLS

  • Clear local data: Use the extension settings or remove the extension entirely.
  • Avoid sharing email: Email is only provided by Chrome if available; you can sign out of Chrome to avoid sharing email.
  • Request deletion: Contact us at [email protected] to request deletion of your server-side usage or entitlement data.

CHILDREN'S PRIVACY

WiseTabs is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have collected personal data from a child, we will delete it promptly.

CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where we have a contact email, through email notification. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
